Legal discovery · Contextual case analysis

Every claim,
traced to the page.

Iris Discovery reads every page of a production and returns the case picture inside it: what was said, to whom, when, where the money went, and where the story contradicts itself. Every entry is cited to the page it came from, so your team can put it in front of a judge.

Page-level citations on every finding
Verbatim quotes, never paraphrased up
Built for counsel, ready for exhibits
Medical records · Bank & tax records · Business books · Emails & texts · Depositions · Court filings Every finding links back to its page.
The problem

The answer is in the production. Somewhere in the 4,000 pages.

Productions arrive as scans, out of order and full of duplicates. The facts that decide a case are a single line in a note, one transfer between accounts, or a date that doesn't match. Finding them by hand takes weeks. Missing one can cost you the case.

A stack of PDFs

  • Dozens of files from different sources, each in its own format
  • The same records produced twice under different names
  • Entries dated by when they were posted or signed, not when the event happened
  • A statement in one document that contradicts another, buried months apart

A case you can see

  • One chronology across every source, dated to the event, with duplicates resolved
  • Patterns made visible: visits, transfers, messages and incidents on one calendar
  • Contradictions surfaced with both sources side by side
  • One click to the page: every citation opens the source exhibit at the cited page
What we analyze

One method, any record set.

The work is the same whatever the paper: read every page, put it in order, line it up against everything else, and cite it. What changes is the question.

Medical & treatment

Charts, prescriptions, pharmacy fills, labs, imaging, therapy notes

  • Which providers prescribed what, and did each know about the others?
  • Do test results match what was prescribed?
  • Do exam findings match the reported injury?

Financial

Bank and card statements, tax returns, pay records, business books

  • Does declared income match what was deposited?
  • Where did transfers and cash withdrawals go?
  • Which accounts are missing from the disclosure?

Communications

Email, text messages, social media, call and calendar logs

  • Who knew what, and when did they know it?
  • What was said privately that contradicts the testimony?
  • When did the tone or the story change?

Employment & benefits

Personnel files, timesheets, payroll, leave and disability claims

  • Does attendance match the claimed limitations?
  • What was documented before the dispute began?
  • Do the claim forms agree with each other?

Business & contracts

Corporate records, invoices, contracts and their drafts, board minutes

  • Who approved it, and who was paid?
  • What changed between drafts, and when?
  • Do the books match the representations?

Testimony & filings

Depositions, affidavits, interrogatory answers, prior pleadings

  • Which sworn statements do the documents contradict?
  • What has the witness said before, and where?
  • Which answers were left incomplete?
Services

Discovery support with context, not just keywords.

Keyword search tells you where a word appears. Context tells you what it means: who said it, who it was said to, what happened before and after, and what the rest of the record says about it.

Record review & indexing

Every page read and indexed by date, author, source and subject. Duplicates across productions identified and reconciled.

→ Searchable index · page map

Chronologies & visual calendars

Visits, transactions, messages and reported incidents on a single timeline. Color-coded calendars show at a glance what a table would bury.

→ Print-ready PDF · linked HTML

Contradiction & pattern analysis

Statements compared across sources and over time: what someone told one person versus another, what they swore to versus what the documents show.

→ Finding memos with both sources

Deposition support

Page-and-line summaries of transcripts, cross-referenced to the records each answer touches. Outlines of what the record supports and what it doesn't.

→ Summaries · cross-exam outlines

Linked exhibit packets

Organized, numbered exhibits with an index whose every citation opens the source document at the cited page, for the court, co-counsel or your expert.

→ Exhibit index · deep links

Financial analysis

Bank, card, tax and business records reconciled into one picture: income against deposits, transfers traced between accounts, spending patterns over time, and anything missing from a disclosure.

→ Funds trace · income & spending schedules
Process

From production to case picture.

A disciplined, repeatable process, so every output can be checked against the page it came from.

01

Intake

You send the productions as they arrived. We inventory every file, count every page and flag duplicates and gaps before analysis begins.

02

Page-level extraction

Every page is read, including scans and handwriting where legible, and captured with its date, author, setting and verbatim text.

03

Cross-referencing

Entries are aligned across sources and time. Dates are corrected to the event, not the signature. Statements are compared for consistency.

04

Cited deliverables

Chronologies, calendars, summaries and memos, where every entry carries a citation that opens the source page.

Deliverables

Work product that holds up.

Built to be read by a judge in five minutes, then checked line by line by opposing counsel.

Standards

Vigilant by design.

Analysis is only useful if it survives scrutiny. These rules apply to every deliverable we produce.

I.

Cited, or it isn't in.

No finding appears without the production and page it came from. If we can't point to it, we don't say it.

II.

Quotes stay quotes.

The record's own words are reproduced verbatim. We never sharpen a statement into something stronger than what the page says.

III.

Fact apart from inference.

What the record says and what it suggests are kept visibly separate, so you always know which is which.

IV.

The weak points, too.

Innocent explanations, gaps and records that cut the other way are flagged, before opposing counsel finds them for you.

Who we work with

Built for record-heavy matters.

Any case where the truth is spread across hundreds of documents from many sources.

Confidentiality & compliance

Privileged, protected and accounted for.

Every engagement runs through counsel, under written agreements, with a documented trail from intake to destruction.

01Engagement through counselMaster services agreement, per-matter statement of work, conflicts check
  • Retained by the attorney or firm, not the client directly, under a master services agreement with a statement of work for each matter.
  • A conflicts check against the parties is run before any records are received.
  • Work is performed under the direction and supervision of counsel, consistent with counsel’s duties for nonlawyer assistance.ABA Model Rule 5.3
  • We do not give legal advice, or communicate with parties, witnesses or the court on a matter except as counsel directs.
02Privilege & work productKovel engagements, consulting-expert protection, privileged labeling
  • Where counsel needs our analysis to give legal advice, we are retained under a Kovel agreement so that communications stay within the attorney-client privilege.United States v. Kovel, 296 F.2d 918 (2d Cir. 1961)
  • Analysis prepared at counsel’s direction in anticipation of litigation is attorney work product, and we can be retained as a non-testifying consulting expert.Fed. R. Civ. P. 26(b)(3), 26(b)(4)(D) and state equivalents
  • Deliverables are marked “Privileged & Confidential: Prepared at the Direction of Counsel.” Nothing goes to anyone other than counsel without counsel’s written instruction.
  • If we find material that looks privileged and was produced by mistake, we stop, set it aside and notify counsel so a clawback can be pursued.Fed. R. Evid. 502(b), 502(d)
03Health informationBusiness associate agreements, HIPAA protective orders, Part 2 records
  • When records contain protected health information received from a covered entity or its business associate, we sign a business associate agreement, or a subcontractor BAA with the firm.45 C.F.R. §§ 164.502(e), 164.504(e)
  • Records produced in litigation are handled within the terms of the qualified protective order or authorization they were released under, and used only for that matter.45 C.F.R. § 164.512(e)
  • Substance-use treatment records carry stricter limits on use and redisclosure. They are kept separate and used only as the consent or court order allows.42 C.F.R. Part 2
  • Access is limited to the minimum necessary for the work.
04Protective ordersSigned acknowledgments, confidentiality tiers, attorneys’-eyes-only handling
  • We sign the protective order’s acknowledgment and agreement to be bound before receiving designated material.
  • Confidentiality designations, including Attorneys’ Eyes Only, carry through to every working copy and every deliverable that quotes them.
  • Designated material is stored separately and never used outside the matter it was produced in.
05Chain of custodyIntake logs, hash verification, read-only originals, Bates-level citations
  • Every delivery is recorded in a chain-of-custody log: date, sender, method, file names, page counts and who handled it.
  • Each file is fingerprinted with a SHA-256 hash on receipt. Originals are kept read-only, and all work is done on verified copies.
  • Every finding cites the production and the Bates number or page, so it can be checked against the original and authenticated.Fed. R. Evid. 901, 902(13)–(14)
  • Chronologies and calendars are built as summaries of voluminous records, with the underlying pages identified for each entry.Fed. R. Evid. 1006
06Data securityEncryption, access controls, matter isolation, AI safeguards
  • Records are encrypted in transit and at rest, and accounts are protected by multi-factor authentication.
  • Each matter is stored separately, and access is limited to the people working on it.
  • Records are exchanged only by secure transfer, never as ordinary email attachments.
  • Any AI tools are used only under commercial terms that prohibit training on client data, and every AI-assisted finding is checked against the source page before it is delivered.ABA Formal Opinion 512 (2024)
07Retention & destructionWritten retention schedule, legal holds, certified destruction
  • Each engagement has a written retention schedule agreed with counsel at the start.
  • A legal hold suspends any scheduled deletion until counsel releases it.
  • At the close of the matter, or when a protective order requires it, records are returned or destroyed using recognized media-sanitization methods.NIST SP 800-88
  • Counsel receives a signed certificate of destruction listing what was destroyed, how and when.

Our MSA, Kovel engagement letter, BAA, and data-handling and retention policy are available to counsel on request.
